The CHISAGO COUNTY MN PHOTO DOCUMENTARY PROJECT is designed to document life in this largely rural Minnesota county about 50 miles north of the Twin Cities by providing still photographs of the people, places, things, and situations that make living in the county meaningful.
My hope is to provide a living historical record of what it is like to live in this county during the early 21st century in a style that has been historically used by photographers from Jacob Riis to Robert Frank. My hope is that my mentor, Homer Page, would be proud. I started the idea after meeting with members of the Chisago County Historical Society to interest them on the idea for the project. My goal is to give the photographs I shoot to the Society to be a part of their permanent record of what life is like here. Some of the modern images I make can be matched with the archive photographs they have stored that go back more than 100 years. Of course, most of the work will stand alone as the document of what life was like here at the time. Captions are available whenever possible, but most of the work, especially the situations, are filed by the event itself. It will take time - in fact, this is a project I will work on so long as I live here. I will try to go to public events and also shoot what I see as the culture here. Someday, perhaps others will feel what we feel it is like to have lived here. |
